“Enterprise : Last Full Measure” by Andy Mangels & Michael A. Martin

A mediocre novel.

Normally this should have been an instant success, with a rather strong writer pair writing in a so far rather strong Enterprise novel line (granted, Dave Stern alone is responsible for this). But to my utter disappointment Last Full Measure is the weakest of all the original Enterprise novels. The story is boring and predictable, there wasn’t one point in the novel where I thought, “Wow, I haven’t seen THAT coming!”. Quite the opposite to be honest, more often than not I was amazed how predictable the story was. Add to that that there were several occasions which annoyed the hell out of me, i.E. the way to obvious insertion of Star Wars stuff (if I want to read a Star Wars novel I know where to get one , thank you) and the cameo of the Kirk family. Heck, I like cameos of known characters as much as the next guy, but only if they make sense and this one made no sense. It felt more like the authors and/or the editor only thought : Wouldn’t it be cool to have Kirk in an Enterprise novel?” I haven’t seen most of Season 4, so I won’t comment on the big surprise in the framing story, but quite frankly this part of the novel felt not like it fits with the rest of the novel, although it has some minor connections with it. The only thing stopping me from giving this novel a really bad rating is the characterization, which is the only part where the authors are near their usual quality, although even there are some points to criticize, mainly the characterization of the MACO’s in the first half of the novel. They appeared to me more like street thugs than the elite combat troop they are supposed to be and although this is cleared out during the novel my initial irritation about that didn’t helped to improve my estimation of the novel. On the bright side we get some stuff on Mayweather and Reed and the characterizations of the Starfleet regulars are quite fitting.

Overall a totally unimpressive and lackluster novel which has only one bright spot, the characterization.
